As a dog mom, you develop certain habits and quirks that only other dog moms can understand. While these quirks may seem strange to non-dog parents, they are just a normal part of being a dog mom. Here are a few funny dog mom quirks that you may be able to relate to:
Paparazzi
You have a phone filled with pictures of your dog, and you have to show them off to anyone who will look. Pics of your dog sleeping, pics of your dog eating, and (let’s be honest) pics of your dog’s poo (because, as Dog Moms, we need to know that our fur babies are healthy – and what better way to check than with poo pics? 😉
Barkday Celebrations
You buy them a “barkday” cake and dress them up in cute birthday outfits to celebrate. If this is you, and you’re in the Cape Town area, I can highly recommend Pupcakes Dog Bakery in West Beach. Here’s Emmy and Zoe celebrating Emmy’s 10th birthday in 2022. Bandanas by All Things Love-a-Lee, also in West Beach.
Compulsive Shopping
See a toy, buy a toy – you just can’t resist buying your dog a new toy or accessory every time you see one. Whether it’s a cozy bed, a flashy leash, or a fun new chew toy, you can’t resist the urge to spoil your furry friend. My boy, Oscar LOVED any kind of squeaky toy and, on any given day, I was stepping on a fake squeaky foot, a plastic hot dog, or a rope toy he’d left lying around.
Confiding in your canine
You talk to your dog like you would a person and expect a response, even though you know it’s not going to happen. Whether you’re asking your dog for their opinion on a new movie or chatting about your day, you can’t help but have full-blown conversations with your furry friend.
Dog Friendly Holidays Only
You plan your holidays around whether or not your dog can come with you. You don’t want to leave your beloved dog behind, so you make sure to find pet-friendly accommodations or arrange for someone you completely trust (in my case, the dogs’ grandmother :-D) to take care of your dog while you’re away. Here’s a shameless plug: If you want to spoil the Grandpawrent in YOUR life, check out our Dog Mom range for Grandpawrents.
You have “security cameras”
You have cameras set up throughout the house purely so that you can check on your babies whenever you’re out (or, wait, is that just me?!) My cameras of choice, are the Tapo Link C100 and C200 – great value for money, great quality, and the fact that you can follow your doggies’ every move is epic. You can find these on Takealot if you’re ready to spy on the fur children. 😀
You’re a show-off
You’re always “showing off” the tricks your dog can do whenever people come around. When you’re fur baby nails his/her sit, down and paw routine, your smug smile says it all, “Look at my good boy/girl! See what a great job I did training him/her?”
You’re just a fantastic Dog Mom
You have a special bond with your dog and often feel like they are your child. Your dog is a member of your family, and you love and care for them as if they were your child. You can tell, just from a look, if your dog is feeling a bit off and you fly into “mommy” mode and watch them like a hawk, with the vet on speed dial, just in case. You have dog beds in every room and dog ramps to help your fur kid onto the couch or bed. (If you don’t already have these, you may want to check out our ramp offering for Dogs.)
Being a dog mom is a special and rewarding experience. These quirks may seem funny to others, but they are just a small part of the love and dedication that you have for your furry friend. So embrace your inner dog mom and all of your quirks – your dog wouldn’t have it any other way!
